Prince Harry hopeful King Charles' cancer could bring royal family closer
NEW DELHI: King Charles's cancer diagnosis could bring the British royal family closer together, Prince Harry said in an interview on Friday .
King Charles' estranged son Prince Harry also said that he loved his family and was grateful to have recently seen his father.
Earlier this month, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles had been diagnosed with a form of cancer and would be postponing public engagements to undergo treatment.
Upon hearing the news, Harry flew to London and had a brief meeting with his father before returning to the US.
When asked about the potential reunifying effect of illness on a family, especially in the case of the royal family, Harry responded positively.
"Throughout all these families I see it on a day-to-day basis - the strength of the family unit coming together," he said during an event in Canada linked to the Invictus Games for injured military veterans. "Any illness, any sickness, brings families together," he added.
In the past, Harry's autobiography "Spare" and the Netflix documentary series he made with Meghan revealed damaging revelations about his father and elder brother.
However, despite their differences, Harry made it clear that he still loved his family. "The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go see him and spend any time with him - I'm grateful for that," he stated.
Regarding his own identity, Harry was asked if he felt American. He responded with a "no" but added, "I don't know how I feel." He mentioned that he had considered becoming a US citizen but clarified that it was not a high priority for him at the moment.
While the royal family typically keeps medical matters private, Charles chose to go public with his diagnosis as he is a patron of several cancer-related charities. The palace has not provided further details about the type of cancer Charles has.
Since the announcement, Charles has been photographed traveling between his homes in London and eastern England, waving to onlookers. Prince Harry mentioned that he has other trips planned that will take him through the UK or back to the UK, where he intends to stop and see his family as much as possible.
